What to Consider when Selecting a Planter

Indoor planters or outdoor planters? Terra cotta or metal? What about watering and drainage?

These are just some of the factors that play an important role in helping you select which planter to purchase and how it will protect and more importantly, spotlight your greenery. You will find a wide array of planters both big and small, made from a range of eye-catching materials, and built to withstand heat, moisture, and whatever else the unpredictable weather has in store throughout all four seasons.

Indoor plants are typically easier to keep alive and looking great, while outdoor plants might require some additional work and care when it comes to finding the best planter for your home.

For starters, know where your planter is going to live. Indoor planters are not recommended for use outside, there are planters in our catalog that can withstand outdoor conditions and planters that are suitable for use in both environments.

Plant Size and Weight

Measuring the base of your plant or tree will allow you to find the perfect size planter. A good rule of thumb is to ensure the planter is about two or three inches wider than the pot in which your greenery is growing. Anything wider won't be practical and a more narrow pot won't do you much good in the long run.

The weight of the plant is also an important factor as you don't want the planter to crack under the pressure or become overwhelmed and tip over due to a top-heavy plant or tree.

Planter Materials

Browse the Belle & June catalog and you will find planters made from clay, terra cotta, iron, and porcelain, just to name a few.  Some of these materials are coated with glaze and adorned with exterior decorative motifs. Before you choose, consider how some of these materials can help your plant, tree, or vegetable garden thrive.

The materials that have more breathability and circulation can allow for more oxygen and moisture to get in and keep the soil of your plant in excellent condition. For those materials that do not allow air or moisture through, the drainage channels of your planter will need to be sufficient to handle the increased watering needed to prevent the soil from drying out.

Drainage Considerations

Even the most ornate, decorative planters with delicate hand-sculpted petals and raised filigree have a drainage hole to prevent water from pooling at the bottom of the container. Plants and other greenery that need routine watering should be placed on a saucer to curb any leaks or flash floods indoors. Planters that are kept outdoors may not require these preventive measures as the excess water can seep out, only to dry in the sun afterward.

But always remember that your planters do have drainage holes and you want to ensure that you won’t mar any surfaces with excess moisture causing serious water damage

Proper Maintenance of Your Planter

All of the planters you will find in our catalog are easy to maintain with little more than a damp cloth. Wiping your planters clean once a week will help to keep them looking their best and prevent the materials from wearing down prematurely.

Outdoor planters are built for durability and long-lasting resilience but consider if you plan to move them frequently from one area of the exterior to another or replace your planters on a routine basis, you increase the risk of compromising the integrity of the planter and damaging the exterior walls.

When you buy a planter, decide on the ways you plan to use it and choose a material that can stand up to that level of wear and tear.

Now that you know the basics of buying a planter, you can let your imagination soar as you fill your home and your life with the decor that makes an impact.
